Fall Corn Craft
Like my Popsicle Stick Scarecrow, this popsicle stick corn cob has also been tucked away for years in my craft basket, quietly waiting its turn to be photographed. Bright, cheerful, and ready for harvest time, this happy corn cob is finally getting its moment to shine—just in time for fall fun!
As children paint their corn cob yellow and press buttons into place for kernels, they’re practicing important preschool skills. Painting helps strengthen hand-eye coordination, while pressing and gluing the small pieces supports fine motor development. These simple steps turn a fun seasonal craft project into hands-on learning for little ones!

Preschool Corn Craft Directions
Follow these simple steps to build your own popsicle stick corn cob. Kids can paint, glue, and decorate as they go, making each little corn craft full of personality.
STEP 1: Create the base. First, line up three wide craft sticks into a staggered shape, then glue two mini popsicle sticks across the back to hold them together (see picture below).

STEP 2: Paint the base. Flip the popsicle stick base over, then paint it yellow to make the corn cob. Next, paint the two dog tag popsicle sticks green to make corn husks. Set all the pieces aside to dry.

STEP 3: Attach the husks. When the paint is dry, hot glue the two green husks to the bottom of the corn cob.

STEP 4: Decorate the corn character’s face. First, glue on two wiggly eyes. Next add a construction paper mouth. You could also draw the mouth with a paint pen.

STEP 5: Add kernels. Press a few little buttons onto the cob to look like corn kernels. Once the glue dries, your happy corn is ready for harvest fun!

Take It Further
Once your corn cob craft is complete, there are plenty of ways to turn it into a learning opportunity and extra fun activity for kids:
- Talk with kids about different types of corn—from sweet corn to Indian corn. While this is a smiling corn cob craft, you could easily adapt it into an Indian corn craft variation with colorful dots, beads, or paper pieces.
- Taste different varieties of fresh, local corn!
- Use this craft as part of a harvest bulletin board or table display.
- Turn your corn character into a puppet by gluing an extra stick on the bottom. Use the corns in classroom storytelling or puppet shows.
- Pair this craft with a visit to a corn maze in September or October.
- Incorporate counting by having kids tally the buttons they glued on.
- No dog tag popsicle sticks? Cut green cardstock or construction paper into a similar shape and use that instead.
- Pair this craft with a book about the fall harvest such as We Gather Together: Celebrating the Harvest Season by Wendy Pfeffer.
