Mirror Book Play with KORXX Blocks
KORXX blocks are sustainable building blocks made from granulated natural cork. They are eco-friendly, natural, and very quiet. KORXX’s high quality cork is free of harmful contaminants (no phthalates, dioxins, and formaldehyde), making it a safe toy for nurseries, playrooms, classrooms, and the backyard. Unlike cork used for other products, KORXX blocks are safe for even the smallest of children.
My children enjoy bringing their KORXX bricks outside for imaginative nature play, but they are also perfectly suited for open-ended indoor play. Next to building, my boys’ favorite way to play and learn with KORXX is through mirror play. Through the use of mirror books, kids can freely explore important STEAM concepts like symmetry, geometry, building, art, and design.
Since cork provides excellent stability without slippage, kids can stack the blocks against the mirror book in many creative ways! The Limbo block set (the natural colored blocks pictured below) is especially fun to stack against the mirror books.
Make A Mirror Book
To make a mirror book, simply use an 8″ piece of duct tape to tape two 8″x 8″ mirrors together. Invite kids to build with KORXX blocks against the mirror, then observe what happens when the width of the mirror book is narrowed or widened. I do recommend using mirror books on a cloth covered surface so wooden table surfaces do not get scratched when kids open and close the mirror.
Take it Further
Give kids other materials from around the house or classroom to use with their mirror books. How do their designs change as the width of the mirrors and height of their creations change? Can they use part of a shape and the mirror to make a complete shape?
Another idea…use mirror books during arts and crafts time! My children often draw in front of their mirror books because they like to see their picture reflected. They also like to draw half of a picture and see the symmetrical reflection in the mirror.
